We arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica Feb 4, 2005 and stayed the night at the Palma Real Hotel. The next morning we went to Tapanti National Park and then spent two nights at Savegre Mountain Lodge in the Cerro de la Muerte area. This is a mountainous cloud forest area in the south-central portion of the country and offers one of the more reliable locations for Resplendent Quetzals.

We then went to Selva Verde lodge for the next 3 nights and explored the La Selva Biological Station and Braulio Carrillo National Park. This is a wet forest on the low Carribean side of the country. We then went to the rain-cloud forest located in Cinchona, Costa Rica's central mountain range near the San Fernando waterfall. We stopped at a small cafe here with feeder stations in a large backyard bordering extensive rainforest. The cafe is called Mirador de Cinchona and it is on the road called Vara Blanca. This is near the Waterfall Gardens. (A few hours at this cafe one morning yielded Palm, Blue-gray, Passerini's, Silver-throated, Golden-hooded, Summer, and Crimson-collared Tanagers, Common Bush-Tanager, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Clay-colored Robin, Green Thorntail, Green-crowned Brilliant, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Scaly-breasted Hummingbird, Violet Sabrewing, Variable Seedeater, White-naped Brush-Finch, Buff-throated Saltator, Black-cowled Oriole, Emerald Toucanet, and Red-headed and Prong-billed Barbet. )

We then continued on to the Arenal Volcano and spent the night at the Montana de Fuego Inn. The next day we drove to Los Chiles near the Nicaraguan border and took a boat trip on the Rio Frio to the Cano Negro wildlife refuge and then returned to the Montana de Fuego Inn. The next day we drove around Lake Arenal to La Ensenada ranch on the Gulf of Nicoya for 2 nights. This is an active cattle ranch in a dry forest area and has lagoons on the property with many birds and crocodiles. We took a boat trip here into the mangrove swamp habitat in the gulf.

Then we went to Carara Biological Reserve on the Pacific coast for 2 nights. We stayed here at Villa Lapas which has a very nice elevated sky walk. We then returned to San Jose and spent the night at the Bougainvillea Hotel and then headed for home the nextmorning (Feb 17). The tour was led by Bill Turner toursbyturner@aol.com from Denver, Colorado. Our excellent Costa Rica guide was Max Vindas maxvindas@yahoo.com.
